RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) – Learning a language can be difficult, especially when that language is fading away. But with new apps and resources, the Lakota language is seeing more and more learners.

Allen Wilson, the Todd County School District Lakota language, culture, and outreach coordinator, teaches both staff, students, and community members Lakota and continues to learn the language himself. Five years ago, he said only 2,000 of the 176,000 enrolled tribal members on South Dakota’s nine reservations were fluent in the language. And most were in their mid-sixties.

Lakota language is fading, but Wilson said new resources and technology provide people with the information they need to revitalize the language.

“There’s no excuse,” said Wilson. “People need to learn Lakota, and there’s no excuse now. There’s a plethora of resources we can all utilize and practice and 20, 30 years ago, we had a lot more fluent speakers than we do now, and it wasn’t as dark as it seems now.”

Wilson described one app, the New Lakota Dictionary, as a gift from the elders. It provides a vast word database and sentences and pronunciation to help better learn the language.

PIERRE, S.D. — If you’re looking for a quick translation or reference tool while learning the Lakota language, there’s an app for that.

Developed by the Lakota Language Consortium, their dictionary app can be found in the Android and Apple iOS marketplaces.

The Consortium began gathering a database of over 23,000 Lakota words with the help of linguists and community members in the early 1990s. The goal was to produce a printed dictionary.

With the number of Lakota speakers on the decline since the 1950s, the Lakota Language Consortium wanted a resource for future generations to learn the language.

As the COVID-19 situation continues to unfold and bring difficulties to everyone across the country, we remain committed to our goal of serving the Lakota community and language. We will continue to produce language-learning materials and plan language events–even if that means hosting them virtually. Please stay tuned to LLC social media to stay up to date on any news or changes that may occur. We thank you for your support and hope that you all stay safe.

Going Virtual

LLC is adapting to the ongoing COVID-19 situation by offering virtual options for previously scheduled events. It is important to us to continue offering chances for Lakota language warriors to learn from skilled teachers, and we are fortunate for the technology to be able to bring the language classroom into customers’ homes.

April 18-19: Virtual Lakota Language Weekend-Mountain Time
The response has been so great for our first Virtual Lakota Language Weekend that we’re hosting a second Virtual LLW for our friends out west. All start times will be in Mountain Time to accommodate the schedules of those in Western states, but anyone from anywhere is welcome. This event is open to beginner to intermediate Lakota language learners. Learn more and register here: bit.ly/2J8rwZ5

Lakota Summer Institute South Online

The 2020 Lakota Summer Institute South is coming to you! Due to stay-in-place orders across the country, this annual event is moving to a virtual platform to still be able to serve Lakota language learners. LLC is working to keep the event June 1-12 as planned, but make sure to follow LLC on social media to stay up to date on any changes and to be the first to know when registration is live.

Lakota Summer Institute North Online
The University of North Dakota has just canceled all summer programs, so this means the Lakota Summer Institute North will likewise be canceled.
So we are working on moving this event online! We are excited to be able to keep Lakota language learning going on this virtual platform. Tentatively, the event will take place July 6-17. Make sure to follow LLC on social media, though, so you can stay up to date on any changes and know when to register.
