It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of one of Lakota country’s leading language champions and our dear friend, Sandra Black Bear.

Wíŋyaŋ waŋ Sandra Black Bear ečíyapi kiŋ hé, makȟá-wičhóni ékignake kiŋ líla ičháŋteuŋšičape ló.

Sandra was passionate about the Lakota language and its reawakening for future generations. She was an elder in the Rosebud Sioux Tribe and was heavily involved in the pursuit of revitalization and health for the language. Some of her many contributions include acting as “Uŋčí” in the Lakota language adaptation of the Berenstain Bears, participating in plays, teaching at numerous Lakota Summer Institutes, and extensive work on the Lakota Language Dictionary. Her passion for the language, her integrity, and her wisdom has guided many important moments, and the Lakota Language Consortium is grateful for having known her. We honor her legacy in earnest and will continue to move forward in the spirit of working positively and productively on the language that she loved. We send our deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Follow The Progress Of The Lakota Summer Institute

Lakota Summer Institute (LSI) is happening NOW. Yesterday we wrapped up the first week of the 3-week institute. Follow us on social media for the next three weeks as we share updates from our beginner, intermediate, and teacher virtual tracks.

Since 2007 LSI has been bringing together the Lakota people and those passionate about the language to learn Lakȟótiyapi. It’s incredible to gather groups from across Lakota Country for a common purpose. Participants reconnect with peers, mentors, and friends from past Institutes, creating an ideal Lakota learning community – bound together their investment in reawakening the Lakota language.

This is a delightful and busy time for everyone at the institute. Thank you to our events team, and teachers for all your hard work making LSI possible.

NLD Mobile Update For Android Users

Friday, July 9th LLC released an update to the NLD in the Apple and Android stores. While the Apple update had no issues, some Android users encountered issues downloading the update. Our tech team worked with Google and users to resolve errors reported over the weekend. As of Monday, July 12, Google’s representatives have advised us the problem is resolved. Android users should have no issues downloading or updating the NLD Mobile App on their Android devices. If you have experienced this issue, we recommend you uninstall and reinstall the app or attempt to update the version. Before you get started, make sure you have a stable internet connection and that there is enough space on your device for this download of 174 MB (learn how to check your space here, or free up storage here). Once you have downloaded the NLD Mobile, make sure you do not allow your device to fall into sleep mode until the content inside the app is fully downloaded. Depending on the internet speed to your device this additional download may take 3 – 30 minutes and when complete. Again this will consume 174 MB of storage on the device when fully downloaded.

We apologize for the confusion and any inconvenience that this has caused for users. If you continue to have issues with the NLD Mobile App on Android, you can email tech@lakhota.org for additional support.

Ómakȟa tȟéča wówiyunškiŋ!
Happy New Year! 2020 was challenging for all of us as we mourned the loss of many language legacies who were influential in the communities and were advocates for Lakota language learning for decades. As we step into this new year, we have a lot to look forward to in 2021! This year, we’re collaborating to develop new picture and intermediate-level books, recording speakers for the Lakota Audio Series Vol. 2, working on more teacher features for the Owóksape platform, and partnering to host Lakota learning events. Make sure to follow our Facebook page to stay up to date on the latest learning materials and events. We are very grateful for the daily support of individuals like you and foundations’ financial contribution that continue to aid in efforts for Lakota language revitalization. We wish you a happy and healthy new year.

Water is Everywhere
A new picture book is underway! This month, we’re working on the Lakota version of Water is Everywhere which will be the first book in a four book beginner science series. These colorful images illustrated by Marty Two Bulls teach children about water, describe different bodies of water, and depict the many ways we use it in our daily lives. Be the first to know when this book is available in the LLC bookstore by checking our Facebook page.
