Before colonization, the indigenous peoples of North America spoke nearly 500 different languages. Today, there are only 20 languages with enough speakers for a revitalization effort.

Lakota is one of them.

The Lakota Language Consortium hosted a Lakota Language Weekend in South Dakota’s largest city last weekend.

Allen Wilson remembers hearing his grandma chat enthusiastically with friends in Lakota when he was growing up. He grew up on the Rosebud Reservation, and he also remembers one of the first moments he understood Lakota. It was a windy day at home with his mother.

“It’s a two-story house, and one of the windows was open. And the wind closed one of the doors and my mom said, ‘Oooh, gigi.’ And just from the context I knew it was like, ‘Ooh, there’s a ghost there!’ And I’ll always remember that.”

Wilson took some Lakota language classes back in college, but was discouraged by the difficulty. But when he moved back home after living in New Mexico, he had a renewed desire to learn. He finished a degree in Lakota history and culture, and became a teacher. It was then he realized…

“… the Lakota language was really in danger of disappearing. I think they said out of 176 thousand enrolled members on reservations in South Dakota, there’s a little over 2 thousand fluent speakers left. Which is a really, really small number.”

Wilson’s now involved with the Lakota Language Consortium. It’s a non-profit created in 2004 that supplies Lakota dictionaries, textbooks, and other materials to schools, tribes, and individual learners across the country.

Wil Meya is the executive director. He explains that while Lakota has more speakers than some other Native languages, there is still cause for concern.

“We’re at the point where we’ve lost over 90% of the speaker population. And we’re just not able to replace them fast enough. Currently we’d need to be producing 100-200 speakers a year just to maintain the levels we have.

The Lakota Language consortium’s programs produce 20 to 30 speakers a year. Meya says that’s not enough.

“That’s why we’re in places like Sioux Falls and Rapid City trying to get people engaged in really what we call a movement to take back and get the language spoken again.”

And the movement is open to anyone. At the recent Lakota Language Weekend instructors held two days of intensive language lessons at Southeast Tech in Sioux Falls. Students young and old, Native and non-Native, attended because they want to learn the language.

Stella Lawrence is a massage student from Mitchell and heard about the class from a friend. Lawrence has relatives who speak Lakota. She and her mom have talked about learning it together.

“But she’s in a different state and so I told her about this opportunity. So she said, ‘Take your sister and get to that class!’ And I was like, alright, I’m gonna do it.”

Lawrence’s sister, Cheyene, is a high school junior in Chamberlain. She remembers hearing her grandparents speak Lakota and wondering about the language.

“At first, before coming to this class, I was kinda, ‘Mmm, I’ll try it.’ In this class though the tutors and instructors inspired me…So, it’s kinda like, when he’s talking about it, I remembered it and thought it’s gonna take some work but I think it’ll be worth it.”

The classes at the Lakota Language Weekend focused on conversational instruction. Allen Wilson and other teachers use examples so students can learn in context—like that moment when he was 8 years old and realized he knew what his mother was saying. Wilson and Ben Black Bear—another instructor from the  Rosebud Reservation—demonstrate identifying different age groups for men and women.

Wilson calls another instructor a young boy—someone who clearly isn’t—and in context some of the students catch the joke. But there are plenty of blank stares. Some get hung up on questions about verb tense and exact translation, but are encouraged to pick up clues from careful listening, practice, and context–the way everyone learns their first language as a child.

It’s an intense method, but Ben Black Bear says it’s the best. Lakota was his first language, and he’s been teaching it for nearly 50 years.

“In other words, the bottom line is learning the language is more important than learning the rules and the grammar and things like that. The sound system and stuff like that. All that comes in the process of learning the language. As long as that’s emphasized with the teachers, the language will grow and spread.”

Black Bear uses other methods too, like translating well known songs to Lakota to teach a handful of words and phrases at once.

Before colonization, Lakota wasn’t a written language. But Wilson says to survive, it needs to be—so young people can write or text in Lakota. Black Bear says the changing nature of the language is a challenge, but it’s worthwhile so young people and students can learn.

“I think this interest in reviving the language and teaching it to young people, it’s gonna help young people to expand their knowledge, expand their minds and understand things that they otherwise wouldn’t if they only spoke one of the languages…”

Wilson is scared by the dwindling number of Lakota speakers, but encourages learners to build a new community.

“But really it’s that I hope that I inspire someone to self study, to be disciplined, to be a teacher of Lakota, to really put that effort forth, to help in the fight against language loss. I need allies for sure! Again it can seem like a daunting task. But these are our first steps in revitalizing Lakota. But I’ve a feeling it’s only going to get bigger from here, and better, and stronger! ”

The final lesson of the first day of this Lakota Language Weekend: there’s no phrase for goodbye in Lakota. Instead there’s more of a farewell.

To?ks?a akhe? wa?c?hi?ya?ki? kte.

In Lakota: I will see you again.

A national organization is working to save the Lakota language.

This Saturday more than 50 people were at South East Technical institute in Sioux Falls to participate in the Lakota language weekend.

While instructors say they don’t expect people to learn the language in a weekend, they hope this workshop will spark their interest to continue learning.

“Out of respect for the land and the Lakota communities that first inhabited this area, it is very important to continue that language,” Lakota language teacher Alex Firethunder said.

He says as many Lakota speakers get older, it’s important for the next generation to learn the language.

He says many indigenous languages around the nation are endangered or extinct.

Sioux Falls, S.D. – A language workshop is being put on this weekend to try and teach others about their endangered language.

“I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a fear in me of our language disappearing. But there’s so much work to be done that is being done,” says Alex Firethunder Loeb.

According to stories past down through time, the Lakota people have lived in the American Midwest since the beginning of time.

With the language becoming endangered, the Lakota language experts say they are doing everything they can to keep their native language going.

“Lakota, the Sioux language, which is a relatively easy language to learn once you get into it. But we’re trying to revive the language and keep it alive. So we’re doing everything we possibly case to do that,” says Ben Blackbear Jr.

Lakota language teachers say the history of their language has had a recently ugly past.

“Our language was outlawed, there were policies to say you couldn’t speak it. Children were taken from their homes and communities and sent to boarding schools. And it was quite literally beaten out of them to not speak or pray in their languages,” Loeb tells us.

The Language Conservancy program is a group that helps save endangered languages. Among Lakota language, the Language Conservancy partners with many native speaking groups to put on events like these to help keep their languages alive.

The students attending the workshop are a mix of people with Lakota ancestry as well as Non-Indian teachers with Lakota students in their classes. The class is not designed to make you a fluent Lakota speaker over the weekend.

For Loeb, he hopes the students attending the workshop have the drive to continue learning about the Lakota language.

“I want to see people leave here feeling inspired and motivated to continue on that journey the same way people like myself have,” says Loeb.

Only 2,000 people speak Lakota anymore, according to one report from the Lakota Language Consortium.

That’s down from 6,000 Lakota speakers a decade ago. An effort is underway to save the language, though.

Fluent Lakota speakers like Naomi Last Horse are traveling the country and offering crash courses to beginners. Naomi was surrounded by Lakota as a child.

“It was always weaved into everything that we had done from cooking to starting a fire to having a good time,” she said.

She’s at the University of Denver November 18 and 19 hoping to spark a fire for learning in people like Cali Wolf, a self-described ‘urban native’.

“I didn’t grow up learning the language, so I felt really compelled to come out and learn as much as I can and continue that when I get home,” Cali said.

She became interested in the language after moving to Denver a few years ago.

“I had a bit of an identity crisis trying to figure out who I am, and I feel like a lot of people who are urban natives feel that way,” she said.

For Naomi, teaching Lakota to Cali and others like her does more than just keep a set of words alive.

“It means your identity, the color of your skin, your hair,” Naomi said. “It says a lot about your customs, your traditions, your heritage, everything.”

Nearly 100 people filled the conference rooms at the Hilton Garden inn to learn the Lakota language.

There was a wide variety of ages and ethnicities present at the weekend event.

It was two days of learning for some of the new people and review for those who wanted to polish up their skills.

The conference was $40 dollars for both days and 25 for just one, but all the money goes to helping future events like the one that happened on Saturday and Sunday.

Event Coordinator, Rebecca Mueller, explains “that cost is just going towards a little bit for instructors to be here and then all of the cost associated with bringing the materials. And as people are purchasing materials, all that is going back into making more materials for the language and holding more weekends in the future.”

The use of Lakota language has been decreasing over the years, but this event is trying to change that.

One attendee hopes big things for the Lakota language in the future.

Event Attendee, Alex Firethunder-Lobe, says “I want to see the Lakota language used every day, especially here on the Lakota land. The land we are on in Rapid City, it’s not reservation land per se, however historically Lakota’s lived here. The Lakota language was spoken here before English ever was.”

If you missed today’s event, this group is traveling all over the nation to teach the Lakota language.

Lakota language speakers and enthusiasts gathered Saturday in Rapid City to advance their understanding and fluency in the language.

The Lakota Language Weekend, an event held by the Lakota Language Consortium, was an opportunity for speakers of Lakota to improve their skills in the endangered language, which is spoken fluently by only about 2,000 people in the world.

Roughly 100 attendees had an opportunity to learn from experts and improve their proficiency in conversation, grammar, and pronunciation of Lakota. Lakota gave many of the place names on the High Plains.

For many of Lakota ancestry this language holds deep, personal meaning as a connection to their culture and the others who share it.

“Lakota is the language of the land,” said Bino Garcia, an instructor with the Lakota Language Consortium. “There is a connection between the land and the language. Of course, it’s a big part of culture and knowing your identity and who you are, conversing in a language that was used here, on this land, years previous.”

Like all languages, though, learning Lakota is a challenge that deepens your connection to the culture, and is very rewarding to master.

“Studying the Lakota language is almost like a puzzle,” said Lora Catches, an elementary school teacher in Pine Ridge. “Once you get a little piece of the puzzle, you start putting it together, and it just gets bigger and bigger. The more you learn, then the more you can teach, [and you become] a part of the revitalization of the Lakota language,” she continued.

For information on future Lakota Language Weekends across the region, as well as Lakota language resources, visit the Lakota Language Consortium online, or on Facebook.

Remembering Leonard Little Finger

Lakȟóta wičháša waŋ okínihaŋ čha iȟpéya uŋkíyayape ló. Wičháša kiŋ Leonard Little Finger ečíyapi. Líla theȟíyakel oíyokišiče ló. Líla iyóuŋkšičapi.

We honor the memory of Leonard Little Finger, esteemed Lakota elder and one of our founding board members, who passed away on April 8, 2017 in Pine Ridge.

It’s hard to imagine the Lakota Language Consortium today without his early support and encouragement.

In the 1950s, Leonard was one of the first in his generation to leave the reservation for a better education, earning a B.S. from Utah State University. He returned to Pine Ridge to work for the Indian Health Service Hospital, eventually becoming CEO. After retiring from IHS, he received an A.D. in Lakota Studies from Oglala Lakota College at the age of 56, becoming a State certified Lakota Language Instructor.

In the 1990’s one of Leonard’s many initiatives was an organic gardening project that brought German students to Pine Ridge each summer to work alongside local tribal members.

Leonard also partnered on several early language projects in the ’90s, which evolved into an integrated vision for teaching Lakota that informs our work today. When the Lakota Language Consortium was established in 2005, Leonard was a natural fit for our first board, where he served for  3/12 years.

Early LLC Board meeting, circa 2005

Leonard later helped establish the Lakota Language Consortium and its early projects, including the memorable 2006 visit to Pine Ridge by legendary German rock star Peter Maffay to help bring attention to the project.

Leonard Little Fingers’ passing is another reminder of how fleeting the language is, and the crisis we’re facing. We can’t take for granted any of the speakers who are still around.

The elders truly did their best to pass their torch onto the next generation. Now it’s up to all of us to move it forward.

Wičháša kiŋ lé líla wawókiyiŋ na Lakȟól’iyapi kiŋ glukínipi kiŋ él íškiŋčiye ló. Tȟokátakiya kiksúya uŋk’úŋpi kte ló.

Lakota Grammar Handbook

It’s here after nearly two years of development so we’re celebrating with the linguists and native speakers of Lakota who worked with us here at the Lakota Language Consortium to complete the Lakota Grammar Handbook, a 636-page self-study guide we believe is going to become the gold standard for Native American language learning in the U.S.

Both a reference guide and a practice workbook, the Lakota Grammar Handbook is the most comprehensive grammar book ever compiled of the Lakota language and is designed for a wide range of users: from beginning learners to Lakota language teachers, educators who use the native language and linguistic researchers. It’s been a massive undertaking: 19,000 Lakota sentences, including over 11,600 practice sentences, 230 learning units, all taken from the study of authentic narratives and dialogs recorded from hundreds of Lakota speakers.

This is the first Lakota grammar designed primarily for self-study so neither a teacher nor previous experience with Lakota is required to use the handbook effectively. It is also organized progressively, so learners can work their way through it gradually, learning new patterns of the grammar. Each pattern can be practiced in exercises provided for every unit and learners can check their answers in the answer key at the end of the book. It is also packed with important cultural content, for example, how possessive verbs are used in prayers to evoke the relationship to the Creator.

“I don’t think I’ve ever read a better grammar of any North American language,” said Marianne Mithun, a University of California Santa Barbara linguistics professor who specializes in American Indian languages. “This is certainly an extraordinary document that should serve as a model for all others aiming to do the same thing: documenting a language in its full richness and detail, but making it all accessible to motivated and sophisticated readers, as well as linguists.”

It was authored by linguist, fluent Lakota speaker and LLC board member Jan Ullrich with the assistance of fellow LLC board member Ben Black Bear, a first-language Lakota speaker, founder of the Lakota Studies program at Sinté Gleška University and the Lakota Studies and Lakota language teacher at St. Francis Mission School in St. Francis, S.D.

Ullrich thanked Black Bear for the important role he played in consultation, sentence proofing, and in providing the nearly 20,000 audio-recorded language examples and practice sentences that are expected to be used in follow-up audio learning materials, including the forthcoming Owóksape Lakota language on-line learning platform expected to be released in late 2017-early 2018.

“This is the most detailed and accurate grammar of Lakota ever, and will serve as a reference grammar and as a pedagogical grammar for a long time to come,” said Willem de Reuse, a University of North Texas Research Professor whose work has focused on the documentation of endangered languages.
