Lakota Keyboards

The Lakota Keyboard makes it easy to type Lakota characters on your computer or mobile device. The keyboard uses standard Unicode characters, so text you type can be copied, pasted, searched, shared, emailed, and used across modern applications without installing special fonts.

You do not need to install a Lakota font to use the keyboard.

Install the Lakota Keyboard

Important: The .klc file is the keyboard layout source file. To install a .klc file, you must first build it with Microsoft’s Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC).

Download US-Lakota for Windows

If you are installing from the .klc file

  1. Download the US-Lakota .klc file.
  2. Download and install Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (MSKLC).
  3. Open Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator.
  4. Select File → Load Source File.
  5. Select the downloaded US-Lakota .klc file.
  6. Select Project → Build DLL and Setup Package.
  7. Follow the prompts to build the keyboard.
  8. Open the folder created by MSKLC.
  9. Run setup.exe.
  10. Follow the installation prompts.
  11. Restart Windows if requested.

After installation, US-Lakota will be available as a keyboard layout.

Add US-Lakota to Windows

After installing the keyboard layout:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Time & language.
  3. Select Language & region.
  4. Find the language under which the keyboard was installed.
  5. Select the ⋯ menu next to that language.
  6. Select Language options.
  7. Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard.
  8. Select US-Lakota.

You do not need to change your Windows display language to Lakota.

If US-Lakota does not appear immediately, restart Windows and check the keyboard list again.

Activate US-Lakota

Select US-Lakota from the keyboard/input indicator on the Windows taskbar. Or press Windows + Space to switch between installed keyboards.

Install the Lakota Keyboard

Download US-Lakota for MacOS
  1. Download the Lakota keyboard.
  2. Open the downloaded file and install the keyboard.
  3. Open System Settings.
  4. Select Keyboard.
  5. Under Text Input, select Edit next to Input Sources.
  6. Click the + button.
  7. Find and select Lakota.
  8. Click Add.

After installation, Lakota will be available as an input source.

Add Lakota to Your Input Sources

If the Lakota keyboard is not already listed:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Keyboard.
  3. Under Text Input, select Edit next to Input Sources.
  4. Click +.
  5. Find Lakota in the list.
  6. Select Lakota.
  7. Click Add.

You do not need to change your Mac’s system language to Lakota.

Activate Lakota

Select Lakota from the Input menu in the macOS menu bar.

Or press Control + Space to switch between your installed input sources.

Gboard

Gboard includes Lakota as a built-in keyboard language, so you do not need to download a separate Lakota keyboard.

Add Lakota to Gboard

  1. Open an app where you can type to bring up Gboard.
  2. Tap the gear icon ⚙️ to open Gboard Settings.
  3. Select Languages.
  4. Select Add keyboard.
  5. Find and select Lakota.
  6. Select the keyboard layout.
  7. Tap Done.

Lakota will now be available as a keyboard language in Gboard.

Activate Lakota

With Gboard open, touch and hold the space bar.

Select Lakota from the list of available languages.

To switch back to another language, touch and hold the space bar again and select the language you want to use.

You do not need to change your phone’s system language to Lakota.
