Exciting news! We are hosting a New Lakota Dictionary Mobile (NLD-Mobile) webinar on January 28th, 2023 at 1:00 pm CST. This webinar aims to create a common place to meet and demonstrate how to best use the NLD-Mobile for personal studying and day-to-day use! During the session, we will provide instructions on navigating the mobile app and highlight the new features. We will also break out into small groups to work through a series of activities to reinforce what we learn. This webinar is designed for anyone seeking to better use the New Lakota Dictionary Mobile! Launch of the 3rd Edition New Lakota Dictionary

Last month, dozens of contributors, speakers, learners, and relatives helped launch the Print 3rd Edition of the New Lakota Dictionary (NLD). We all gathered together at Prairie Edge in Downtown Rapid City on December 15th to honor the work and efforts made by the leaders who helped create the NLD. Those in attendance heard from LLC Board Vice Chair Ben Black Bear Jr., followed by our Deputy Director Alex FireThunder and CEO Wil Meya speaking about language documentation and the impact that the NLD has made through the years. We are thankful to Prairie Edge for letting us use their space to host this event as well as NIEA for providing the swag bags filled with goodies for participants. We gave away over 50 copies of the NLD 3.0 during LNI week and we are proud of the efforts to continue to get free language materials into the hands of Lakota people.

We missed everyone who wasn’t able to make it due to the weather but we hope you’ll join us in the ongoing mission to celebrate the collaborators and leaders in language with each step forward! This launch is just one of the many big steps forward in Lakota language use and documentation.

The mobile version for both Android and IOS is free for download.
If you had the app installed, make sure you update the app to see what’s new.

Native Language Lunch and Learn

NIEA and LLC partnered for a Language Lunch and Learn Wednesday, December 14, 2022. We were happy to be led in prayer by Ben Black Bear Jr. and Arvol Looking Horse during the session. Attendees were able to provide feedback on what is needed to successfully continue and support efforts around language revitalization. Each attendee in person received a copy of the New Lakota Dictionary 3rd Edition.

We discussed the following questions:
How can language organizations, schools, programs, teachers, learners, and communities support each other to build successful language revitalization movements?
How do we further integrate Native ways of thinking and co-construct new knowledge about how to best support Native languages?

The event had been planned in person, but due to the weather was moved to support online attendees that were snowed out. We had a wonderful discussion and are planning a follow-up session in February. Check-in with this newsletter next month for more details.

45th Annual Lakota Nation Invitational (LNI)

One of the highlights of December was our time at LNI. We would like to thank everyone who stopped by the booth and shared a few moments with us! We were very fortunate to see the youth of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ competing against each other with true sportsmanship and passion for the events they participated in. Parents and relatives come together to celebrate the next generation the same way we were celebrated as youth. Congratulations to all the winners and champions. We look forward to the next time we get to spend together in the beautiful Ȟesápa.
